I've just spent a few (solo) days in LA: AirBnB in a quiet, palm tree-lined street in Venice, a bicycle and Uber account for getting around, and an itinerary that included early morning visits to the beach (with coffee), hikes in the Santa Monica mountains, and long, Californian pace strolls along one of the coolest streets in America, Abbot Kinney.
In the 2 or 3 weeks prior to flying out to the City of Angels, I also lined up appointments with some of the more interesting companies in LA: Snapchat, Musical.y, Giphy and of course, Sony Music's West Coast office, where I met the company's VP of innovation. I also met a (British) chap who lives in Venice and runs his own tech firm, who is a friend of a friend, just because it was cool to meet someone new.
The good thing about working for a company like Sony Music is that these platform companies are very keen to meet you because we're a valuable partner. What was also good from my point of view, is that each of the platform companies I met - Snapchat, Musical.y and Giphy - all provide a different experience and set of tools, but they can all be fitted together into a cohesive content strategy. I'm really enjoying thinking about video, gifs, photography and AR as slightly different, yet complimentary, ways of telling the same story.
